           Mr.Crawfordgone,SirThomas’snextobjectwasthatheshouldbemissed;andheentertainedgreathopethathisniecewouldfindablankinthelossofthoseattentionswhichatthetimeshehadfelt,orfancied,anevil.Shehadtastedofconsequenceinitsmostflatteringform;andhedidhopethatthelossofit,thesinkingagainintonothing,wouldawakenverywholesomeregretsinhermind.Hewatchedherwiththisidea;buthecouldhardlytellwithwhatsuccess.Hehardlyknewwhethertherewereanydifferenceinherspiritsornot.Shewasalwayssogentleandretiringthatheremotionswerebeyondhisdiscrimination.Hedidnotunderstandher:hefeltthathedidnot;andthereforeappliedtoEdmundtotellhimhowshestoodaffectedonthepresentoccasion,andwhethersheweremoreorlesshappythanshehadbeen.

           Edmunddidnotdiscernanysymptomsofregret,andthoughthisfatheralittleunreasonableinsupposingthefirstthreeorfourdayscouldproduceany.

           WhatchieflysurprisedEdmundwas,thatCrawford’ssister,thefriendandcompanionwhohadbeensomuchtoher,shouldnotbemorevisiblyregretted.HewonderedthatFannyspokesoseldomofher,andhadsolittlevoluntarilytosayofherconcernatthisseparation.

           Alas!itwasthissister,thisfriendandcompanion,whowasnowthechiefbaneofFanny’scomfort.
