           Itwas,indeed,atriumphantdaytoMr.BertramandMaria.SuchavictoryoverEdmund’sdiscretionhadbeenbeyondtheirhopes,andwasmostdelightful.Therewasnolongeranythingtodisturbthemintheirdarlingproject,andtheycongratulatedeachotherinprivateonthejealousweaknesstowhichtheyattributedthechange,withallthegleeoffeelingsgratifiedineveryway.Edmundmightstilllookgrave,andsayhedidnotliketheschemeingeneral,andmustdisapprovetheplayinparticular;theirpointwasgained:hewastoact,andhewasdriventoitbytheforceofselfishinclinationsonly.Edmundhaddescendedfromthatmoralelevationwhichhehadmaintainedbefore,andtheywerebothasmuchthebetterasthehappierforthedescent.

           Theybehavedverywell,however,tohimontheoccasion,betrayingnoexultationbeyondthelinesaboutthecornersofthemouth,andseemedtothinkitasgreatanescapetobequitoftheintrusionofCharlesMaddox,asiftheyhadbeenforcedintoadmittinghimagainsttheirinclination.“Tohaveitquiteintheirownfamilycirclewaswhattheyhadparticularlywished.Astrangeramongthemwouldhavebeenthedestructionofalltheircomfort”;andwhenEdmund,pursuingthatidea,gaveahintofhishopeastothelimitationoftheaudience,theywereready,inthecomplaisanceofthemoment,topromiseanything.Itwasallgood-humourandencouragement.Mrs.Norrisofferedtocontrivehisdress,Mr.YatesassuredhimthatAnhalt’slastscenewiththeBaronadmittedagooddealofactionandemphasis,andMr.Rushworthundertooktocounthisspeeches.
