           Theintercourseofthetwofamilieswasatthisperiodmorenearlyrestoredtowhatithadbeenintheautumn,thananymemberoftheoldintimacyhadthoughteverlikelytobeagain.ThereturnofHenryCrawford,andthearrivalofWilliamPrice,hadmuchtodowithit,butmuchwasstillowingtoSirThomas’smorethantolerationoftheneighbourlyattemptsattheParsonage.Hismind,nowdisengagedfromthecareswhichhadpressedonhimatfirst,wasatleisuretofindtheGrantsandtheiryounginmatesreallyworthvisiting;andthoughinfinitelyaboveschemingorcontrivingforanythemostadvantageousmatrimonialestablishmentthatcouldbeamongtheapparentpossibilitiesofanyonemostdeartohim,anddisdainingevenasalittlenessthebeingquick-sightedonsuchpoints,hecouldnotavoidperceiving,inagrandandcarelessway,thatMr.Crawfordwassomewhatdistinguishinghisniece—norperhapsrefrain(thoughunconsciously)fromgivingamorewillingassenttoinvitationsonthataccount.

           Hisreadiness,however,inagreeingtodineattheParsonage,whenthegeneralinvitationwasatlasthazarded,aftermanydebatesandmanydoubtsastowhetheritwereworthwhile,“becauseSirThomasseemedsoillinclined,andLadyBertramwassoindolent!”proceededfromgood-breedingandgoodwillalone,andhadnothingtodowithMr.Crawford,butasbeingoneinanagreeablegroup:foritwasinthecourseofthatveryvisitthathefirstbegantothinkthatanyoneinthehabitofsuchidleobservationswouldhavethoughtthatMr.CrawfordwastheadmirerofFannyPrice.
