           Thelittlegirlperformedherlongjourneyinsafety;andatNorthamptonwasmetbyMrs.Norris,whothusregaledinthecreditofbeingforemosttowelcomeher,andintheimportanceofleadingherintotheothers,andrecommendinghertotheirkindness.

           FannyPricewasatthistimejusttenyearsold,andthoughtheremightnotbemuchinherfirstappearancetocaptivate,therewas,atleast,nothingtodisgustherrelations.Shewassmallofherage,withnoglowofcomplexion,noranyotherstrikingbeauty;exceedinglytimidandshy,andshrinkingfromnotice;butherair,thoughawkward,wasnotvulgar,hervoicewassweet,andwhenshespokehercountenancewaspretty.SirThomasandLadyBertramreceivedherverykindly;andSirThomas,seeinghowmuchsheneededencouragement,triedtobeallthatwasconciliating:buthehadtoworkagainstamostuntowardgravityofdeportment;andLadyBertram,withouttakinghalfsomuchtrouble,orspeakingonewordwherehespoketen,bythemereaidofagood-humouredsmile,becameimmediatelythelessawfulcharacterofthetwo.

           Theyoungpeoplewereallathome,andsustainedtheirshareintheintroductionverywell,withmuchgoodhumour,andnoembarrassment,atleastonthepartofthesons,who,atseventeenandsixteen,andtalloftheirage,hadallthegrandeurofmenintheeyesoftheirlittlecousin.Thetwogirlsweremoreatalossfrombeingyoungerandingreateraweoftheirfather,whoaddressedthemontheoccasionwithratheraninjudiciousparticularity.
