           MissCrawfordacceptedthepartveryreadily;andsoonafterMissBertram’sreturnfromtheParsonage,Mr.Rushwortharrived,andanothercharacterwasconsequentlycast.HehadtheofferofCountCasselandAnhalt,andatfirstdidnotknowwhichtochuse,andwantedMissBertramtodirecthim;butuponbeingmadetounderstandthedifferentstyleofthecharacters,andwhichwaswhich,andrecollectingthathehadonceseentheplayinLondon,andhadthoughtAnhaltaverystupidfellow,hesoondecidedfortheCount.MissBertramapprovedthedecision,forthelesshehadtolearnthebetter;andthoughshecouldnotsympathiseinhiswishthattheCountandAgathamightbetoacttogether,norwaitverypatientlywhilehewasslowlyturningovertheleaveswiththehopeofstilldiscoveringsuchascene,sheverykindlytookhispartinhand,andcurtailedeveryspeechthatadmittedbeingshortened;besidespointingoutthenecessityofhisbeingverymuchdressed,andchusinghiscolours.Mr.Rushworthlikedtheideaofhisfineryverywell,thoughaffectingtodespiseit;andwastoomuchengagedwithwhathisownappearancewouldbetothinkoftheothers,ordrawanyofthoseconclusions,orfeelanyofthatdispleasurewhichMariahadbeenhalfpreparedfor.
