Pickwickhavingcommunicatedtheirprobableroute,thedismalmancarefullynoteditdowninagreasypocket-book,and,resistingMr.Pickwick’spressinginvitationtobreakfast,leftthatgentlemanathisinn,andwalkedslowlyaway.
Mr.Pickwickfoundthathisthreecompanionshadrisen,andwerewaitinghisarrivaltocommencebreakfast,whichwasreadylaidintemptingdisplay.Theysatdowntothemeal;andbroiledham,eggs,tea,coffeeandsundries,begantodisappearwitharapiditywhichatonceboretestimonytotheexcellenceofthefare,andtheappetitesofitsconsumers.
‘Now,aboutManorFarm,’saidMr.Pickwick.‘Howshallwego?’
‘Wehadbetterconsultthewaiter,perhaps,’saidMr.Tupman;andthewaiterwassummonedaccordingly.
‘DingleyDell,gentlemen—fifteenmiles,gentlemen—crossroad—post-chaise,sir?’
‘Post-chaisewon’tholdmorethantwo,’saidMr.Pickwick.
