           Thebirds,who,happilyfortheirownpeaceofmindandpersonalcomfort,wereinblissfulignoranceofthepreparationswhichhadbeenmakingtoastonishthem,onthefirstofSeptember,hailedit,nodoubt,asoneofthepleasantestmorningstheyhadseenthatseason.Manyayoungpartridgewhostruttedcomplacentlyamongthestubble,withallthefinickingcoxcombryofyouth,andmanyanolderonewhowatchedhislevityoutofhislittleroundeye,withthecontemptuousairofabirdofwisdomandexperience,alikeunconsciousoftheirapproachingdoom,baskedinthefreshmorningairwithlivelyandblithesomefeelings,andafewhoursafterwardswerelaidlowupontheearth.Butwegrowaffecting:letusproceed.

           Inplaincommonplacematter-of-fact,then,itwasafinemorningsofinethatyouwouldscarcelyhavebelievedthatthefewmonthsofanEnglishsummerhadyetflownby.Hedges,fields,andtrees,hillandmoorland,presentedtotheeyetheirever-varyingshadesofdeeprichgreen;scarcealeafhadfallen,scarceasprinkleofyellowmingledwiththehuesofsummer,warnedyouthatautumnhadbegun.Theskywascloudless;thesunshoneoutbrightandwarm;thesongsofbirds,thehumofmyriadsofsummerinsects,filledtheair;andthecottagegardens,crowdedwithflowersofeveryrichandbeautifultint,sparkled,intheheavydew,likebedsofglitteringjewels.Everythingborethestampofsummer,andnoneofitsbeautifulcolourhadyetfadedfromthedie.
