           ‘Well,wot’samisshere?’growledthemaninthebrowncoat,whohadbeengraduallysneakingupthecourtduringthisshortdialogue.

           ‘Onlysomeinsolenceofthisyoungman’s,’saidtheprincipal,givingSamanotherpush.

           ‘Come,noneo’thisgammon,’growledSmouch,givinghimanother,andaharderone.

           ThislastpushhadtheeffectwhichitwasintendedbytheexperiencedMr.Smouchtoproduce;forwhileSam,anxioustoreturnthecompliment,wasgrindingthatgentleman’sbodyagainstthedoor-post,theprincipalcreptpast,andmadehiswaytothebar,whitherSam,afterbandyingafewepitheticalremarkswithMr.Smouch,followedatonce.

           ‘Good-morning,mydear,’saidtheprincipal,addressingtheyoungladyatthebar,withBotanyBayease,andNewSouthWalesgentility;‘whichisMr.Pickwick’sroom,mydear?’

           ‘Showhimup,’saidthebarmaidtoawaiter,withoutdeigninganotherlookattheexquisite,inreplytohisinquiry.

           Thewaiterledthewayupstairsashewasdesired,andthemanintheroughcoatfollowed,withSambehindhim,who,inhisprogressupthestaircase,indulgedinsundrygesturesindicativeofsupremecontemptanddefiance,totheunspeakablegratificationoftheservantsandotherlookers-on.Mr.Smouch,whowastroubledwithahoarsecough,remainedbelow,andexpectoratedinthepassage.
