           Themasterhimselfwasamanofaboutforty,withblackhair,andcarefullycombedwhiskers.Hewasdressedinaparticularlygorgeousmanner,withplentyofarticlesofjewelleryabouthimallaboutthreesizeslargerthanthosewhichareusuallywornbygentlemenandaroughgreatcoattocrownthewhole.Intoonepocketofthisgreatcoat,hethrusthislefthandthemomenthedismounted,whilefromtheotherhedrewforth,withhisright,averybrightandglaringsilkhandkerchief,withwhichhewhiskedaspeckortwoofdustfromhisboots,andthen,crumplingitinhishand,swaggeredupthecourt.

           IthadnotescapedSam’sattentionthat,whenthispersondismounted,ashabby-lookingmaninabrowngreatcoatshornofdiversbuttons,whohadbeenpreviouslyslinkingabout,ontheoppositesideoftheway,crossedover,andremainedstationarycloseby.Havingsomethingmorethanasuspicionoftheobjectofthegentleman’svisit,SamprecededhimtotheGeorgeandVulture,and,turningsharpround,plantedhimselfintheCentreofthedoorway.

           ‘Now,myfinefellow!’saidthemanintheroughcoat,inanimperioustone,attemptingatthesametimetopushhiswaypast.

           ‘Now,Sir,wot’sthematter?’repliedSam,returningthepushwithcompoundinterest.

           ‘Come,noneofthis,myman;thiswon’tdowithme,’saidtheowneroftheroughcoat,raisinghisvoice,andturningwhite.
