           TheinterestdisplayedinMr.Pickwick’scountenanceismostintense,asMr.Wellerandtheguardtrytosqueezethecod-fishintotheboot,firstheadfirst,andthentailfirst,andthentopupward,andthenbottomupward,andthenside-ways,andthenlong-ways,allofwhichartificestheimplacablecod-fishsturdilyresists,untiltheguardaccidentallyhitshimintheverymiddleofthebasket,whereuponhesuddenlydisappearsintotheboot,andwithhim,theheadandshouldersoftheguardhimself,who,notcalculatinguponsosuddenacessationofthepassiveresistanceofthecod-fish,experiencesaveryunexpectedshock,totheunsmotherabledelightofalltheportersandbystanders.Uponthis,Mr.Pickwicksmileswithgreatgood-humour,anddrawingashillingfromhiswaistcoatpocket,begstheguard,ashepickshimselfoutoftheboot,todrinkhishealthinaglassofhotbrandy-and-water;atwhichtheguardsmilestoo,andMessrs.Snodgrass,Winkle,andTupman,allsmileincompany.TheguardandMr.Wellerdisappearforfiveminutes,mostprobablytogetthehotbrandy-and-water,fortheysmellverystronglyofit,whentheyreturn,thecoachmanmountstothebox,Mr.Wellerjumpsupbehind,thePickwickianspulltheircoatsroundtheirlegsandtheirshawlsovertheirnoses,thehelperspullthehorse-clothsoff,thecoachmanshoutsoutacheery‘Allright,’andawaytheygo.

           Theyhaverumbledthroughthestreets,andjoltedoverthestones,andatlengthreachthewideandopencountry.
