           ‘Vell,’saidSam,astheyhadnowarrivednearthehotel,‘Ivanttohavealittlebito’talkwithyou,Job;soifyou’renotparticklerengaged,IshouldliketoseeyouattheGreatWhiteHorseto-night,somewheresabouteighto’clock.’

           ‘Ishallbesuretocome,’saidJob.

           ‘Yes,you’dbetter,’repliedSam,withaverymeaninglook,‘orelseIshallperhapsbeaskin’arteryou,attheothersideofthegreengate,andthenImightcutyouout,youknow.’

           ‘Ishallbesuretobewithyou,sir,’saidMr.Trotter;andwringingSam’shandwiththeutmostfervour,hewalkedaway.

           ‘Takecare,JobTrotter,takecare,’saidSam,lookingafterhim,‘orIshallbeonetoomanyforyouthistime.Ishall,indeed.’Havingutteredthissoliloquy,andlookedafterJobtillhewastobeseennomore,Mr.Wellermadethebestofhiswaytohismaster’sbedroom.

           ‘It’sallintraining,Sir,’saidSam.
