Therewasashowofhands;themayordecidedinfavouroftheHonourableSamuelSlumkey,ofSlumkeyHall.HoratioFizkin,Esquire,ofFizkinLodge,demandedapoll,andapollwasfixedaccordingly.Thenavoteofthankswasmovedtothemayorforhisableconductinthechair;andthemayor,devoutlywishingthathehadhadachairtodisplayhisableconductin(forhehadbeenstandingduringthewholeproceedings),returnedthanks.Theprocessionsreformed,thecarriagesrolledslowlythroughthecrowd,anditsmembersscreechedandshoutedafterthemastheirfeelingsorcapricedictated.
Duringthewholetimeofthepolling,thetownwasinaperpetualfeverofexcitement.Everythingwasconductedonthemostliberalanddelightfulscale.Excisablearticleswereremarkablycheapatallthepublic-houses;andspringvansparadedthestreetsfortheaccommodationofvoterswhowereseizedwithanytemporarydizzinessinthehead—anepidemicwhichprevailedamongtheelectors,duringthecontest,toamostalarmingextent,andundertheinfluenceofwhichtheymightfrequentlybeseenlyingonthepavementsinastateofutterinsensibility.Asmallbodyofelectorsremainedunpolledontheverylastday
