Atthisviolationofallknownrulesandprecedentsoforder,themayorcommandedanotherfantasiaonthebell,anddeclaredthathewouldbringbeforehimself,bothHoratioFizkin,Esquire,ofFizkinLodge,andtheHonourableSamuelSlumkey,ofSlumkeyHall,andbindthemovertokeepthepeace.Uponthisterrificdenunciation,thesupportersofthetwocandidatesinterfered,andafterthefriendsofeachpartyhadquarrelledinpairs,forthree-quartersofanhour,HoratioFizkin,Esquire,touchedhishattotheHonourableSamuelSlumkey;theHonourableSamuelSlumkeytouchedhistoHoratioFizkin,Esquire;thebandwasstopped;thecrowdwerepartiallyquieted;andHoratioFizkin,Esquire,waspermittedtoproceed.
Thespeechesofthetwocandidates,thoughdifferingineveryotherrespect,affordedabeautifultributetothemeritandhighworthoftheelectorsofEatanswill.Bothexpressedtheiropinionthatamoreindependent,amoreenlightened,amorepublic–spirited,amorenoble-minded,amoredisinterestedsetofmenthanthosewhohadpromisedtovoteforhim,neverexistedonearth;eachdarklyhintedhissuspicionsthattheelectorsintheoppositeinteresthadcertainswinishandbesottedinfirmitieswhichrenderedthemunfitfortheexerciseoftheimportantdutiestheywerecalledupontodischarge.Fizkinexpressedhisreadinesstodoanythinghewaswanted:Slumkey,hisdeterminationtodonothingthatwasaskedofhim.
