           Likeagas-lampinthestreet,withthewindinthepipe,hehadexhibitedforamomentanunnaturalbrilliancy,thensanksolowastobescarcelydiscernible;afterashortinterval,hehadburstoutagain,toenlightenforamoment;thenflickeredwithanuncertain,staggeringsortoflight,andthengoneoutaltogether.Hisheadwassunkuponhisbosom,andperpetualsnoring,withapartialchokeoccasionally,weretheonlyaudibleindicationsofthegreatman’spresence.

           Thetemptationtobepresentattheball,andtoformhisfirstimpressionsofthebeautyoftheKentishladies,wasstronguponMr.Tupman.Thetemptationtotakethestrangerwithhimwasequallygreat.Hewaswhollyunacquaintedwiththeplaceanditsinhabitants,andthestrangerseemedtopossessasgreataknowledgeofbothasifhehadlivedtherefromhisinfancy.Mr.Winklewasasleep,andMr.Tupmanhadhadsufficientexperienceinsuchmatterstoknowthatthemomentheawokehewould,intheordinarycourseofnature,rollheavilytobed.Hewasundecided.‘Fillyourglass,andpassthewine,’saidtheindefatigablevisitor.

           Mr.Tupmandidashewasrequested;andtheadditionalstimulusofthelastglasssettledhisdetermination.
