           Tupmanwassomewhatindignantattheperemptorytoneinwhichhewasdesiredtopassthewinewhichthestrangerpassedsoquicklyaway,orwhetherhefeltveryproperlyscandalisedataninfluentialmemberofthePickwickClubbeingignominiouslycomparedtoadismountedBacchus,isafactnotyetcompletelyascertained.Hepassedthewine,coughedtwice,andlookedatthestrangerforseveralsecondswithasternintensity;asthatindividual,however,appearedperfectlycollected,andquitecalmunderhissearchingglance,hegraduallyrelaxed,andrevertedtothesubjectoftheball.

           ‘Iwasabouttoobserve,Sir,’hesaid,‘thatthoughmyapparelwouldbetoolarge,asuitofmyfriendMr.Winkle’swould,perhaps,fityoubetter.’

           ThestrangertookMr.Winkle’smeasurewithhiseye,andthatfeatureglistenedwithsatisfactionashesaid,‘Justthething.’

           Mr.Tupmanlookedroundhim.Thewine,whichhadexerteditssomniferousinfluenceoverMr.SnodgrassandMr.Winkle,hadstolenuponthesensesofMr.Pickwick.Thatgentlemanhadgraduallypassedthroughthevariousstageswhichprecedethelethargyproducedbydinner,anditsconsequences.Hehadundergonetheordinarytransitionsfromtheheightofconvivialitytothedepthofmisery,andfromthedepthofmiserytotheheightofconviviality.
