           ‘I’dputabulletinhim,ifIfoundhimout,’saidMr.Sawyer,stoppinginthecourseofalongdraughtofbeer,andlookingmalignantlyoutoftheporterpot.‘Ifthatdidn’tdohisbusiness,I’dextractitafterwards,andkillhimthatway.’

           Mr.BenjaminAllengazedabstractedlyonhisfriendforsomeminutesinsilence,andthensaid

           ‘Youhaveneverproposedtoher,point-blank,Bob?’

           ‘No.BecauseIsawitwouldbeofnouse,’repliedMr.RobertSawyer.

           ‘Youshalldoit,beforeyouaretwenty-fourhoursolder,’retortedBen,withdesperatecalmness.‘Sheshallhaveyou,orI’llknowthereasonwhy.I’llexertmyauthority.’

           ‘Well,’saidMr.BobSawyer,‘weshallsee.’

           ‘Weshallsee,myfriend,’repliedMr.BenAllenfiercely.Hepausedforafewseconds,andaddedinavoicebrokenbyemotion,‘Youhavelovedherfromachild,myfriend.Youlovedherwhenwewereboysatschooltogether,and,eventhen,shewaswaywardandslightedyouryoungfeelings.
