           ‘Whatisit?’inquiredMr.BobSawyer.

           ‘Youmustmakeyourself,withaslittledelayaspossible,masterofArabella’sonethousandpounds.’

           ‘Threepercent.consolidatedbankannuities,nowstandinginhernameinthebookorbooksofthegovernorandcompanyoftheBankofEngland,’addedBobSawyer,inlegalphraseology.

           ‘Exactlyso,’saidBen.‘Shehasitwhenshecomesofage,ormarries.Shewantsayearofcomingofage,andifyoupluckedupaspiritsheneedn’twantamonthofbeingmarried.’

           ‘She’saverycharminganddelightfulcreature,’quothMr.RobertSawyer,inreply;‘andhasonlyonefaultthatIknowof,Ben.Ithappens,unfortunately,thatthatsingleblemishisawantoftaste.Shedon’tlikeme.’

           ‘It’smyopinionthatshedon’tknowwhatshedoeslike,’saidMr.BenAllencontemptuously.

           ‘Perhapsnot,’remarkedMr.BobSawyer.‘Butit’smyopinionthatshedoesknowwhatshedoesn’tlike,andthat’sofmoreimportance.
