Theshipwasnowveryneartherocks.Themenwerereadywiththeboat,andthecaptainbesidethemgivingorders,whenatremendouswavecametowardsus.Wethreerantowardsthebowtolayholdofouroar,andhadbarelyreacheditwhenthewavefellonthedeckwithacrashlikethunder.Atthesamemomenttheshipstruck;theforemastbrokeoffclosetothedeckandwentovertheside,carryingtheboatandmenalongwithit.Ouroargotentangledwiththewreck,andJackseizedanaxetocutitfree;butowingtothemotionoftheship,hemissedthecordageandstrucktheaxedeepintotheoar.Anotherwave,however,washeditclearofthewreck.Weallseizedholdofit,andthenextinstantwewerestrugglinginthewildsea.ThelastthingIsawwastheboatwhirlinginthesurf,andallthesailorstossedintothefoamingwaves.ThenIbecameinsensible.
OnrecoveringfrommyswoonIfoundmyselflyingonabankofsoftgrass,undershelterofanoverhangingrock,withPeterkinonhiskneesbymyside,tenderlybathingmytempleswithwater,andendeavouringtostopthebloodthatflowedfromawoundinmyforehead.
