Iimmediatelyrantotheoverhangingledgeofrock,fromwhichhewaslookingdownintothesea,andbentoverit.ThereIsawaveryfaint,paleobjectofagreenishcolour,whichseemedtomoveslightlywhileIlookedatit.
"It’slikeafishofsomesort,"saidI.
"Hallo,Peterkin!"criedJack."Fetchyourspear;here’sworkforit!"
Butwhenwetriedtoreachtheobject,thespearprovedtobetooshort.
"There,now,"saidPeterkinwithasneer;"youwerealwaystellingmeitwastoolong."
Jacknowdrovethespearforciblytowardstheobject,andletgohishold.Butalthoughitseemedtobewellaimed,hemusthavemissed,forthehandlesoonroseagain;andwhenthespearwasdrawnup,therewasthepale-greenobjectinexactlythesamespot,slowlymovingitstail.
"Veryodd!"saidJack.
Butalthoughitwasundoubtedlyveryodd,andalthoughJackandallofusplungedthespearatitrepeatedly,wecouldneitherhititnordriveitaway,sowewerecompelledtocontinueourjourneywithoutdiscoveringwhatitwas.Iwasverymuchperplexedatthisstrangeappearanceinthewater,andcouldnotgetitoutofmymindforalongtimeafterwards.However,IquietedmyselfbyresolvingthatIwouldpayavisittoitagainatsomemoreconvenientseason.
