           Peterkin’stonewassomuchalteredbythedepressinginfluenceofhislongimprisonmentthat,hadInotknownitwashewhospoke,Ishouldscarcelyhaverecognisedit,sosadwasit,andsounliketothemerry,cheerfulvoicewehadbeenaccustomedtohear.Iponderedthismuch,andthoughtoftheterribledeclineofhappinessthatmaycomeonhumanbeingsinsoshortatime;howbrightthesunshineintheskyatonetime,andinashortspacebowdarktheovershadowingcloud!IhadnodoubtthattheBiblewouldhavegivenmemuchlightandcomfortonthissubjectifIhadpossessedone,andIoncemorehadoccasiontoregretdeeplyhavingneglectedtostoremymemorywithitsconsolingtruths.

           WhileImeditatedthus,Peterkinagainbrokethesilenceofthecavebysaying,inamelancholytone,"Oh,Iwonderifweshalleverseeourdearislandmore!"

           Hisvoicetrembled,andcoveringhisfacewithbothhands,hebentdownhisheadandwept.
