Thevillageoffwhichweanchoredwasbeautifullysituatedattheheadofasmallbay,fromthemarginofwhichtreesofeverydescriptionpeculiartothetropicsroseintherichestluxuriancetothesummitofahillyridge,whichwasthelineofdemarcationbetweenthepossessionsoftheChristiansandthoseoftheneighbouringheathenchief.
Thesiteofthesettlementwasanextensiveplotofflatland,stretchinginagentleslopefromtheseatothemountain.Thecottagesstoodseveralhundredyardsfromthebeach,andwereprotectedfromtheglareoftheseabytherichfoliageofrowsoflargeBarringtoniaandothertreeswhichgirttheshore.Thevillagewasaboutamileinlength,andperfectlystraight,withawideroaddownthemiddle,oneithersideofwhichwererowsofthetufted-toppedti-tree,whosedelicateandbeautifulblossoms,hangingbeneaththeirplume-crestedtops,addedrichnesstothescene.Thecottagesofthenativeswerebuiltbeneaththesetrees,andwerekeptinthemostexcellentorder,eachhavingalittlegardeninfront,tastefullylaidoutandplanted,whilethewalkswerecoveredwithblackandwhitepebbles.
EveryhousehaddoorsandVenetianwindows,paintedpartlywithlamp-blackmadefromthecandle-nut,andpartlywithredochre,whichcontrastedpowerfullywiththedazzlingcorallimethatcoveredthewalls.Onaprominentpositionstoodahandsomechurch,whichwasquiteacuriosityinitsway.Itwasahundredfeetlongbyfiftybroad,andwasseatedthroughouttoaccommodateupwardsoftwothousandpersons.
