           Afterthesepoorsavageshadleftusweusedtoholdlongandfrequentconversationsaboutthem,andInoticedthatPeterkin’smannerwasnowmuchaltered.Hedidnot,indeed,jestlessheartilythanbefore,buthedidsolessfrequently;andoftentherewasatoneofdeepseriousnessinhismanner,ifnotinhiswords,whichmadehimseemtoJackandmeasifhehadgrowntwoyearsolderwithinafewdays.ButindeedIwasnotsurprisedatthiswhenIreflectedontheawfulrealitieswhichwehadwitnessedsolately.Wecouldbynomeansshakeoffatendencytogloomforseveralweeksafterwards;butastimeworeaway,ourusualgoodspiritsreturnedsomewhat,andwebegantothinkofthevisitofthesavageswithfeelingsakintothosewithwhichwerecallaterribledream.

           OnedaywewereallenjoyingourselvesintheWaterGardenpreparatorytogoingonafishingexcursion,forPeterkinhadkeptusinsuchconstantsupplyofhogsthatwehadbecomequitetiredofporkanddesiredachange.Peterkinwassunninghimselfontheledgeofrock,whilewewerecreepingamongtherocksbelow.Happeningtolookup,IobservedPeterkincuttingthemostextraordinarycapersandmakingviolentgesticulationsforustocomeup;soIgaveJackapushandroseimmediately.

           "Asail!asailRalph,lookJack,awayonthehorizonthere,justovertheentrancetothelagoon!"criedPeterkinaswescrambleduptherocks.

           "Soitisandaschooner,too!"saidJackasheproceededhastilytodress.
