OnedayItookadvantageofmydearmother’sabsencetomakeanothereffort;and,tomyjoy,Iactuallysucceededinreachingthedoorstep,overwhichItumbledintoapoolofmuddywaterthatlaybeforemyfather’scottagedoor.Ah,howvividlyIrememberthehorrorofmypoormotherwhenshefoundmeswelteringinthemudamongstagroupofcacklingducks,andthetendernesswithwhichshestrippedoffmydrippingclothesandwashedmydirtylittlebody!Fromthistimeforthmyramblesbecamemorefrequentand,asIgrewolder,moredistant,untilatlastIhadwanderedfarandnearontheshoreandinthewoodsaroundourhumbledwelling,anddidnotrestcontentuntilmyfatherboundmeapprenticetoacoasting-vesselandletmegotosea.
ForsomeyearsIwashappyinvisitingtheseaports,andincoastingalongtheshores,ofmynativeland.MyChristiannamewasRalph;andmycomradesaddedtothisthenameofRover,inconsequenceofthepassionwhichIalwaysevincedfortravelling.Roverwasnotmyrealname;butasIneverreceivedanyother,Icameatlasttoanswertoitasnaturallyastomypropername.Andasitisnotabadone,IseenogoodreasonwhyIshouldnotintroducemyselftothereaderasRalphRover.Myshipmateswerekind,good-naturedfellows,andtheyandIgotonverywelltogether.Theydid,indeed,veryfrequentlymakegameofandbanterme,butnotunkindly;andIoverheardthemsometimessayingthatRalphRoverwasa"queer,old-fashionedfellow."This,Imustconfess,surprisedmemuch;andIponderedthesayinglong,butcouldcomeatnosatisfactoryconclusionastothatwhereinmyold-fashionednesslay.ItistrueIwasaquietlad,andseldomspokeexceptwhenspokento.
