Peterkinalsosucceededinmakingexcellentshoesoutoftheskinoftheoldhoginthefollowingmanner:Hefirstcutapieceofthehide,ofanoblongform,afewincheslongerthanhisfoot.Thishesoakedinwater,andwhileitwaswetheseweduponeendofitsoastoformaroughimitationofthatpartoftheheelofashoewheretheseamis.Thisdone,heboredarowofholesallroundtheedgeofthepieceofskin,throughwhichatoughlinewaspassed.Intothesewed-uppartofthisshoehethrusthisheel;then,drawingthestringtight,theedgesroseupandoverlappedhisfootallround.Itistruetherewereagreatmanyill-lookingpuckersintheseshoes;butwefoundthemveryserviceablenotwithstanding,andJackcameatlasttopreferthemtohislongboots.Wealsomadevariousotherusefularticles,whichaddedtoourcomfort,andonceortwicespokeofbuildingusahouse;butwehadsogreatanaffectionforthebower,andwithalfounditsoserviceable,thatwedeterminednottoleaveit,nortoattemptthebuildingofahouse,whichinsuchaclimatemightturnouttoberatherdisagreeablethanuseful.
Weoftenexaminedthepistolthatwehadfoundinthehouseontheothersideoftheisland,andPeterkinwishedmuchthatwehadpowderandshot,asitwouldrenderpig-killingmucheasier;but,afterall,wehadbecomesoexpertintheuseofourslingandbowandspearthatwewereindependentofmoredeadlyweapons.
