           Forthreedaysandthreenightsweremainedonthisrock,whilethestormcontinuedtoragewithunabatedfury.Onthemorningofthefourthdayitsuddenlyceased,andthewindfellaltogether;butthewavesstillransohighthatwedidnotdaretoputoffinourboat.Duringthegreaterpartofthisperiodwescarcelysleptaboveafewminutesatatime;butonthethirdnightwesleptsoundly,andawokeearlyonthefourthmorningtofindtheseaverymuchdown,andthesunshiningbrightlyagainintheclearbluesky.

           Itwaswithlightheartsthatwelaunchedforthoncemoreinourlittleboatandsteeredawayforourislandhome,which,wewereoverjoyedtofind,wasquitevisibleonthehorizon,forwehadfearedthatwehadbeenblownoutofsightofitaltogether.Asitwasadeadcalm,wehadtorowduringthegreaterpartoftheday;buttowardstheafternoonafairbreezesprangup,whichenabledustohoistoursail.WesoonpassedPenguinIslandandtheotherislandwhichwehadfailedtoreachonthedaythestormcommenced;butaswehadstillenoughofprovisions,andwereanxioustogethome,wedidnotlandtothegreatdisappointmentofPeterkin,whoseemedtoentertainquiteanaffectionforthepenguins.

           Althoughthebreezewasprettyfreshforseveralhours,wedidnotreachtheouterreefofourislandtillnightfall;andbeforewehadsailedmorethanahundredyardsintothelagoon,thewinddiedawayaltogether,sothatwehadtotaketoouroarsagain
