           Thedaywasafineone,thoughcloudy,andagentlebreezewasblowing;buttheseawasnotrougher,orthebreakeronthereefhigher,thanusual.Atfirstwethoughtthatthislookedlikeathundercloud,andaswehadhadagooddealofbrokenweatheroflate,accompaniedbyoccasionalpealsofthunder,wesupposedthatastormmustbeapproaching.Gradually,however,thislineseemedtodrawnearerwithoutspreadingupoverthesky,aswouldcertainlyhavebeenthecaseifithadbeenastorm-cloud.Stillneareritcame,andsoonwesawthatitwasmovingswiftlytowardstheisland;buttherewasnosoundtillitreachedtheislandsoutatsea.Asitpassedtheseislandsweobserved,withnolittleanxiety,thatacloudofwhitefoamencircledthem,andburstinsprayintotheair;itwasaccompaniedbyaloudroar.Thisledustoconjecturethattheapproachingobjectwasanenormouswaveofthesea;butwehadnoideahowlargeitwastillitcameneartoourselves.Whenitapproachedtheouterreef,however,wewereawestruckwithitsunusualmagnitude;andwesprangtoourfeet,andclamberedhastilyuptothehighestpointoftheprecipice,underanindefinablefeelingoffear.

           IhavesaidbeforethatthereefoppositeSpoutingCliffwasveryneartotheshore,whilejustinfrontoftheboweritwasataconsiderabledistanceouttosea.Owingtothisformation,thewavereachedthereefatthelatterpointbeforeitstruckatthefootofSpoutingCliff.Theinstantittouchedthereefwebecameaware,forthefirsttime,ofitsawfulmagnitude.
