HereIsawtheceaselessworkingofthoselittlecoralinsectswhoseeffortshaveencrustedtheislandsofthePacificwithvastrocks,andsurroundedthemwithenormousreefs;andIobservedthatmanyoftheseinsects,thoughextremelyminute,wereverybeautiful,comingoutoftheirholesinacircleoffinethreads,andhavingtheformofashuttlecock.HereIsawcuriouslittlebarnaclesopeningaholeintheirbacksandconstantlyputtingoutathin,featheryhand,withwhich,Idoubtnot,theydraggedtheirfoodintotheirmouths.Here,also,Isawthosecrabswhichhaveshellsonlyonthefrontoftheirbodies,butnoshellwhateverontheirremarkablytendertails,sothat,inordertofindaprotectiontothem,theythrustthemintotheemptyshellsofwhelks,orsomesuchfish,andwhentheygrowtoobigforone,changeintoanother.But,mostcuriousofall,Isawananimalwhichhadthewonderfulpower,whenitbecameill,ofcastingitsstomachanditsteethawayfromit,andgettinganentirelynewsetinthecourseofafewmonths!AllthisIsaw,andagreatdealmore,bymeansofmytankandmyburning-glass;butIrefrainfromsettingdownmoreparticularshere,asIhavestillmuchtotelloftheadventuresthatbefelluswhileweremainedonthisisland.
