           Hehadsaidenoughtoshaketheexperienceofeighteen.HehadsaidenoughtogiveFannysomehappierfeelingsthanshehadlatelyknown,andwithabrighterlook,sheanswered,“Yes,cousin,Iamconvincedthatyouwouldbeincapableofanythingelse,thoughperhapssomemightnot.Icannotbeafraidofhearinganythingyouwishtosay.Donotcheckyourself.Tellmewhateveryoulike.”

           Theywerenowonthesecondfloor,andtheappearanceofahousemaidpreventedanyfartherconversation.ForFanny’spresentcomfortitwasconcluded,perhaps,atthehappiestmoment:hadhebeenabletotalkanotherfiveminutes,thereisnosayingthathemightnothavetalkedawayallMissCrawford’sfaultsandhisowndespondence.Butasitwas,theypartedwithlooksonhissideofgratefulaffection,andwithsomeveryprecioussensationsonhers.Shehadfeltnothinglikeitforhours.SincethefirstjoyfromMr.Crawford’snotetoWilliamhadwornaway,shehadbeeninastateabsolutelythereverse;therehadbeennocomfortaround,nohopewithinher.Noweverythingwassmiling.William’sgoodfortunereturnedagainuponhermind,andseemedofgreatervaluethanatfirst.Theball,too—suchaneveningofpleasurebeforeher!Itwasnowarealanimation;andshebegantodressforitwithmuchofthehappyflutterwhichbelongstoaball.
