           Afterthisintroductorypreface,thethreechumsinformedMr.Pickwick,inabreath,thatmoneywas,intheFleet,justwhatmoneywasoutofit;thatitwouldinstantlyprocurehimalmostanythinghedesired;andthat,supposinghehadit,andhadnoobjectiontospendit,ifheonlysignifiedhiswishtohavearoomtohimself,hemighttakepossessionofone,furnishedandfittedtoboot,inhalfanhour’stime.

           Withthisthepartiesseparated,verymuchtotheircommonsatisfaction;Mr.Pickwickoncemoreretracinghisstepstothelodge,andthethreecompanionsadjourningtothecoffee-room,theretospendthefiveshillingswhichtheclericalgentlemanhad,withadmirableprudenceandforesight,borrowedofhimforthepurpose.

           ‘Iknowedit!’saidMr.Roker,withachuckle,whenMr.Pickwickstatedtheobjectwithwhichhehadreturned.‘Didn’tIsayso,Neddy?’

           Thephilosophicalowneroftheuniversalpenknifegrowledanaffirmative.

           ‘Iknowedyou’dwantaroomforyourself,blessyou!’saidMr.Roker.‘Letmesee.You’llwantsomefurniture.You’llhirethatofme,Isuppose?That’sthereg’larthing.’

           ‘Withgreatpleasure,’repliedMr.Pickwick.

           ‘There’sacapitalroomupinthecoffee-roomflight,thatbelongstoaChanceryprisoner,’saidMr.Roker.‘It’llstandyouinapoundaweek.Isupposeyoudon’tmindthat?’

           ‘Notatall,’saidMr.Pickwick.
