Wellermadethisphilosophicalremark,Mr.Pickwickwasawarethathissittinghadcommenced.Thestoutturnkeyhavingbeenrelievedfromthelock,satdown,andlookedathimcarelessly,fromtimetotime,whilealongthinmanwhohadrelievedhim,thrusthishandsbeneathhiscoattails,andplantinghimselfopposite,tookagoodlongviewofhim.Athirdrathersurly-lookinggentleman,whohadapparentlybeendisturbedathistea,forhewasdisposingofthelastremnantofacrustandbutterwhenhecamein,stationedhimselfclosetoMr.Pickwick;and,restinghishandsonhiships,inspectedhimnarrowly;whiletwoothersmixedwiththegroup,andstudiedhisfeatureswithmostintentandthoughtfulfaces.Mr.Pickwickwincedagooddealundertheoperation,andappearedtositveryuneasilyinhischair;buthemadenoremarktoanybodywhileitwasbeingperformed,noteventoSam,whoreclineduponthebackofthechair,reflecting,partlyonthesituationofhismaster,andpartlyonthegreatsatisfactionitwouldhaveaffordedhimtomakeafierceassaultuponalltheturnkeysthereassembled,oneaftertheother,ifitwerelawfulandpeaceablesotodo.
Atlengththelikenesswascompleted,andMr.Pickwickwasinformedthathemightnowproceedintotheprison.
