AfteragreatdealofargumentandrepresentationonthepartofMr.Winkle,however,andafulldisclosureofwhathadpassedintheinterviewwithDowler,Sambegantowaver;andatlengthacompromisewaseffected,ofwhichthefollowingwerethemainandprincipalconditions:—
ThatSamshouldretire,andleaveMr.Winkleintheundisturbedpossessionofhisapartment,ontheconditionthathehadpermissiontolockthedoorontheoutside,andcarryoffthekey;providedalways,thatintheeventofanalarmoffire,orotherdangerouscontingency,thedoorshouldbeinstantlyunlocked.ThatalettershouldbewrittentoMr.Pickwickearlynextmorning,andforwardedperDowler,requestinghisconsenttoSamandMr.Winkle’sremainingatBristol,forthepurposeandwiththeobjectalreadyassigned,andbeggingananswerbythenextcoach—iffavourable,theaforesaidpartiestoremainaccordingly,andifnot,toreturntoBathimmediatelyonthereceiptthereof.And,lastly,thatMr
