           TherewasoneyounggentlemaninanIndia-rubbercloak,whosmokedcigarsallday;andtherewasanotheryounggentlemaninaparodyuponagreatcoat,wholightedagoodmany,andfeelingobviouslyunsettledafterthesecondwhiff,threwthemawaywhenhethoughtnobodywaslookingathim.Therewasathirdyoungmanontheboxwhowishedtobelearnedincattle;andanoldonebehind,whowasfamiliarwithfarming.TherewasaconstantsuccessionofChristiannamesinsmock-frocksandwhitecoats,whowereinvitedtohavea‘lift’bytheguard,andwhokneweveryhorseandhostlerontheroadandoffit;andtherewasadinnerwhichwouldhavebeencheapathalf-a-crownamouth,ifanymoderatenumberofmouthscouldhaveeatenitinthetime.Andatseveno’clockP.m.Mr.Pickwickandhisfriends,andMr.Dowlerandhiswife,respectivelyretiredtotheirprivatesitting-roomsattheWhiteHartHotel,oppositetheGreatPumpRoom,Bath,wherethewaiters,fromtheircostume,mightbemistakenforWestminsterboys,onlytheydestroytheillusionbybehavingthemselvesmuchbetter.Breakfasthadscarcelybeenclearedawayonthesucceedingmorning,whenawaiterbroughtinMr.Dowler’scard,witharequesttobeallowedpermissiontointroduceafriend.Mr.Dowleratoncefollowedupthedeliveryofthecard,bybringinghimselfandthefriendalso.

           Thefriendwasacharmingyoungmanofnotmuchmorethanfifty,dressedinaverybrightbluecoatwithresplendentbuttons,blacktrousers,andthethinnestpossiblepairofhighly-polishedboots.
