Pickwickfounditinvaintoprotesthisinnocence,sohurrieddownstairsintothestreet,whitherhewascloselyfollowedbyMr.Tupman,Mr.Winkle,andMr.Snodgrass.Mr.BenAllen,whowasdismallydepressedwithspiritsandagitation,accompaniedthemasfarasLondonBridge,andinthecourseofthewalkconfidedtoMr.Winkle,asanespeciallyeligiblepersontointrustthesecretto,thathewasresolvedtocutthethroatofanygentleman,exceptMr.BobSawyer,whoshouldaspiretotheaffectionsofhissisterArabella.Havingexpressedhisdeterminationtoperformthispainfuldutyofabrotherwithproperfirmness,heburstintotears,knockedhishatoverhiseyes,and,makingthebestofhiswayback,knockeddoubleknocksatthedooroftheBoroughMarketoffice,andtookshortnapsonthestepsalternately,untildaybreak,underthefirmimpressionthathelivedthere,andhadforgottenthekey.
