           ‘Now,’saidJackHopkins,‘justtosetusgoingagain,Bob,Idon’tmindsingingasong.’AndHopkins,incitedtheretobytumultuousapplause,plungedhimselfatonceinto‘TheKing,Godblesshim,’whichhesangasloudashecould,toanovelair,compoundedofthe‘BayofBiscay,’and‘AFroghewould.’Thechoruswastheessenceofthesong;and,aseachgentlemansangittothetuneheknewbest,theeffectwasverystrikingindeed.

           Itwasattheendofthechorustothefirstverse,thatMr.Pickwickhelduphishandinalisteningattitude,andsaid,assoonassilencewasrestored

           ‘Hush!Ibegyourpardon.IthoughtIheardsomebodycallingfromupstairs.’

           Aprofoundsilenceimmediatelyensued;andMr.BobSawyerwasobservedtoturnpale.

           ‘IthinkIhearitnow,’saidMr.Pickwick.‘Havethegoodnesstoopenthedoor.’

           Thedoorwasnosooneropenedthanalldoubtonthesubjectwasremoved.

           ‘Mr.Sawyer!Mr.Sawyer!’screamedavoicefromthetwo-pairlanding.

           ‘It’smylandlady,’saidBobSawyer,lookingroundhimwithgreatdismay.‘Yes,Mrs.Raddle.’

           ‘Whatdoyoumeanbythis,Mr.Sawyer?’repliedthevoice,withgreatshrillnessandrapidityofutterance.
