           Mr.BobSawyerembellishedonesideofthefire,inhisfirst-floorfront,earlyontheeveningforwhichhehadinvitedMr.Pickwick,andMr.BenAllentheother.Thepreparationsforthereceptionofvisitorsappearedtobecompleted.Theumbrellasinthepassagehadbeenheapedintothelittlecorneroutsidetheback-parlourdoor;thebonnetandshawlofthelandlady’sservanthadbeenremovedfromthebannisters;therewerenotmorethantwopairsofpattensonthestreet-doormat;andakitchencandle,withaverylongsnuff,burnedcheerfullyontheledgeofthestaircasewindow.Mr.BobSawyerhadhimselfpurchasedthespiritsatawinevaultsinHighStreet,andhadreturnedhomeprecedingthebearerthereof,toprecludethepossibilityoftheirdeliveryatthewronghouse.Thepunchwasready-madeinaredpaninthebedroom;alittletable,coveredwithagreenbaizecloth,hadbeenborrowedfromtheparlour,toplayatcardson;andtheglassesoftheestablishment,togetherwiththosewhichhadbeenborrowedfortheoccasionfromthepublic-house,werealldrawnupinatray,whichwasdepositedonthelandingoutsidethedoor.

           Notwithstandingthehighlysatisfactorynatureofallthesearrangements,therewasacloudonthecountenanceofMr.BobSawyer,ashesatbythefireside.Therewasasympathisingexpression,too,inthefeaturesofMr.
