Mr.SerjeantSnubbinswasalantern-faced,sallow-complexionedman,ofaboutfive-and-forty,or—asthenovelssay—hemightbefifty.Hehadthatdull-looking,boiledeyewhichisoftentobeseenintheheadsofpeoplewhohaveappliedthemselvesduringmanyyearstoawearyandlaboriouscourseofstudy;andwhichwouldhavebeensufficient,withouttheadditionaleyeglasswhichdangledfromabroadblackribandroundhisneck,towarnastrangerthathewasverynear-sighted.Hishairwasthinandweak,whichwaspartlyattributabletohishavingneverdevotedmuchtimetoitsarrangement,andpartlytohishavingwornforfive-and-twentyyearstheforensicwigwhichhungonablockbesidehim.
