           ‘Itisatouchingthingtohearthemindrevertingtotheordinaryoccupationsandpursuitsofhealth,whenthebodyliesbeforeyouweakandhelpless;butwhenthoseoccupationsareofacharacterthemoststronglyopposedtoanythingweassociatewithgraveandsolemnideas,theimpressionproducedisinfinitelymorepowerful.Thetheatreandthepublic-housewerethechiefthemesofthewretchedman’swanderings.Itwasevening,hefancied;hehadaparttoplaythatnight;itwaslate,andhemustleavehomeinstantly.Whydidtheyholdhim,andpreventhisgoing?heshouldlosethemoneyhemustgo.No!theywouldnotlethim.
