‘Lauk,Mrs.Bardell,’saidMrs.Cluppins,‘seewhatyou’vebeenanddone!’
‘Well,thatisagoodone!’ejaculatedMrs.Sanders.
‘Ah,mypoorhead!’saidMrs.Bardell,withafaintsmile.
Samunderstoodallthis,ofcourse,sohesaidatonce,thathenevercoulddrinkbeforesupper,unlessaladydrankwithhim.Agreatdealoflaughterensued,andMrs.Sandersvolunteeredtohumourhim,soshetookaslightsipoutofherglass.ThenSamsaiditmustgoallround,sotheyalltookaslightsip.ThenlittleMrs.Cluppinsproposedasatoast,‘SuccesstoBardellaginPickwick’;andthentheladiesemptiedtheirglassesinhonourofthesentiment,andgotverytalkativedirectly.
