‘Everybodywhoisatallacquaintedwiththeatricalmattersknowswhatahostofshabby,poverty-strickenmenhangaboutthestageofalargeestablishment—notregularlyengagedactors,butballetpeople,processionmen,tumblers,andsoforth,whoaretakenonduringtherunofapantomime,oranEasterpiece,andarethendischarged,untiltheproductionofsomeheavyspectacleoccasionsanewdemandfortheirservices.Tothismodeoflifethemanwascompelledtoresort;andtakingthechaireverynight,atsomelowtheatricalhouse,atonceputhiminpossessionofafewmoreshillingsweekly,andenabledhimtogratifyhisoldpropensity.Eventhisresourceshortlyfailedhim;hisirregularitiesweretoogreattoadmitofhisearningthewretchedpittancehemightthushaveprocured,andhewasactuallyreducedtoastateborderingonstarvation,onlyprocuringatrifleoccasionallybyborrowingitofsomeoldcompanion,orbyobtaininganappearanceatoneorotherofthecommonestoftheminortheatres;andwhenhedidearnanythingitwasspentintheoldway.
‘Aboutthistime,andwhenhehadbeenexistingforupwardsofayearnooneknewhow,IhadashortengagementatoneofthetheatresontheSurreysideofthewater,andhereIsawthisman,whomIhadlostsightofforsometime;forIhadbeentravellingintheprovinces,andhehadbeenskulkinginthelanesandalleysofLondon.Iwasdressedtoleavethehouse,andwascrossingthestageonmywayout,whenhetappedmeontheshoulder.
