Bardell’smostparticularacquaintance,whohadjuststeppedin,tohaveaquietcupoftea,andalittlewarmsupperofacoupleofsetsofpettitoesandsometoastedcheese.Thecheesewassimmeringandbrowningaway,mostdelightfully,inalittleDutchovenbeforethefire;thepettitoesweregettingondeliciouslyinalittletinsaucepanonthehob;andMrs.Bardellandhertwofriendsweregettingonverywell,also,inalittlequietconversationaboutandconcerningalltheirparticularfriendsandacquaintance;whenMasterBardellcamebackfromansweringthedoor,anddeliveredthemessageintrustedtohimbyMr.SamuelWeller.

Mrs.Bardellfeltitpropertobeagitated;andasnoneofthethreeexactlyknewwhetherunderexistingcircumstances,anycommunication,otherwisethanthroughDodson&Fogg,oughttobeheldwithMr.Pickwick’sservant,theywereallrathertakenbysurprise.Inthisstateofindecision,obviouslythefirstthingtobedone,wastothumptheboyforfindingMr.Welleratthedoor.Sohismotherthumpedhim,andhecriedmelodiously.
