           itwasaraggedhead,thesandyhairofwhich,scrupulouslypartedononeside,andflatteneddownwithpomatum,wastwistedintolittlesemi-circulartailsroundaflatfaceornamentedwithapairofsmalleyes,andgarnishedwithaverydirtyshirtcollar,andarustyblackstock.

           ‘Mr.Dodsonain’tathome,andMr.Fogg’sparticularlyengaged,’saidthemantowhomtheheadbelonged.

           ‘WhenwillMr.Dodsonbeback,sir?’inquiredMr.Pickwick.‘Can’tsay.’

           ‘WillitbelongbeforeMr.Foggisdisengaged,Sir?’

           ‘Don’tknow.’

           Herethemanproceededtomendhispenwithgreatdeliberation,whileanotherclerk,whowasmixingaSeidlitzpowder,undercoverofthelidofhisdesk,laughedapprovingly.

           ‘IthinkI’llwait,’saidMr.Pickwick.Therewasnoreply;soMr.Pickwicksatdownunbidden,andlistenedtotheloudtickingoftheclockandthemurmuredconversationoftheclerks.
