           ‘Hollo!’saidWardle;‘foracaseinwhichthere’snothingsuspicious,thislooksratherqueereh,Pickwick?Ah,slydogslydog!’andhelaughedtilltheglassesonthesideboardrangagain.

           ‘Whatadreadfulconjunctionofappearances!’exclaimedMr.Pickwick,restinghischinuponhishands.‘WinkleTupmanIbegyourpardonfortheobservationsImadejustnow.Weareallthevictimsofcircumstances,andIthegreatest.’WiththisapologyMr.Pickwickburiedhisheadinhishands,andruminated;whileWardlemeasuredoutaregularcircleofnodsandwinks,addressedtotheothermembersofthecompany.

           ‘I’llhaveitexplained,though,’saidMr.Pickwick,raisinghisheadandhammeringthetable.‘I’llseethisDodsonandFogg!I’llgotoLondonto-morrow.’

           ‘Notto-morrow,’saidWardle;‘you’retoolame.’

           ‘Well,then,nextday.’

           ‘NextdayisthefirstofSeptember,andyou’repledgedtorideoutwithus,asfarasSirGeoffreyManning’sgroundsatallevents,andtomeetusatlunch,ifyoudon’ttakethefield.’

           ‘Well,then,thedayafter,’saidMr.Pickwick;‘Thursday.Sam!’
