HavingbeeninstructedbyMrs.MarthaBardelltocommenceanactionagainstyouforabreachofpromiseofmarriage,forwhichtheplaintifflaysherdamagesatfifteenhundredpounds,webegtoinformyouthatawrithasbeenissuedagainstyouinthissuitintheCourtofCommonPleas;andrequesttoknow,byreturnofpost,thenameofyourattorneyinLondon,whowillacceptservicethereof.

Therewassomethingsoimpressiveinthemuteastonishmentwithwhicheachmanregardedhisneighbour,andeverymanregardedMr.Pickwick,thatallseemedafraidtospeak.ThesilencewasatlengthbrokenbyMr.Tupman.
