           Mr.Pickwickwasperfectlyawarethatatreeisaverydangerousneighbourinathunderstorm.Hehadatreeonhisright,atreeonhisleft,athirdbeforehim,andafourthbehind.Ifheremainedwherehewas,hemightfallthevictimofanaccident;ifheshowedhimselfinthecentreofthegarden,hemightbeconsignedtoaconstable.Onceortwicehetriedtoscalethewall,buthavingnootherlegsthistime,thanthosewithwhichNaturehadfurnishedhim,theonlyeffectofhisstruggleswastoinflictavarietyofveryunpleasantgratingsonhiskneesandshins,andtothrowhimintoastateofthemostprofuseperspiration.

           ‘Whatadreadfulsituation,’saidMr.Pickwick,pausingtowipehisbrowafterthisexercise.Helookedupatthehouseallwasdark.Theymustbegonetobednow.Hewouldtrythesignalagain.
