           Asthecoachrollsswiftlypastthefieldsandorchardswhichskirttheroad,groupsofwomenandchildren,pilingthefruitinsieves,orgatheringthescatteredearsofcorn,pauseforaninstantfromtheirlabour,andshadingthesun-burnedfacewithastillbrownerhand,gazeuponthepassengerswithcuriouseyes,whilesomestouturchin,toosmalltowork,buttoomischievoustobeleftathome,scramblesoverthesideofthebasketinwhichhehasbeendepositedforsecurity,andkicksandscreamswithdelight.Thereaperstopsinhiswork,andstandswithfoldedarms,lookingatthevehicleasitwhirlspast;andtheroughcart-horsesbestowasleepyglanceuponthesmartcoachteam,whichsaysasplainlyasahorse’sglancecan,‘It’sallveryfinetolookat,butslowgoing,overaheavyfield,isbetterthanwarmworklikethat,uponadustyroad,afterall.’Youcastalookbehindyou,asyouturnacorneroftheroad.Thewomenandchildrenhaveresumedtheirlabour;thereaperoncemorestoopstohiswork;thecart-horseshavemovedon;andallareagaininmotion.Theinfluenceofascenelikethis,wasnotlostuponthewell-regulatedmindofMr.Pickwick.Intentupontheresolutionhehadformed,ofexposingtherealcharacterofthenefariousJingle,inanyquarterinwhichhemightbepursuinghisfraudulentdesigns,hesatatfirsttaciturnandcontemplative,broodingoverthemeansbywhichhispurposecouldbebestattained.
