           ‘Mr.Smithie,Mrs.Smithie,andtheMissesSmithie,’wasthenextannouncement.

           ‘What’sMr.Smithie?’inquiredMr.TracyTupman.

           ‘Somethingintheyard,’repliedthestranger.Mr.SmithieboweddeferentiallytoSirThomasClubber;andSirThomasClubberacknowledgedthesalutewithconsciouscondescension.LadyClubbertookatelescopicviewofMrs.Smithieandfamilythroughhereye-glassandMrs.SmithiestaredinherturnatMrs.Somebody-else,whosehusbandwasnotinthedockyardatall.

           ‘ColonelBulder,Mrs.ColonelBulder,andMissBulder,’werethenextarrivals.

           ‘Headofthegarrison,’saidthestranger,inreplytoMr.Tupman’sinquiringlook.

           MissBulderwaswarmlywelcomedbytheMissesClubber;thegreetingbetweenMrs.ColonelBulderandLadyClubberwasofthemostaffectionatedescription;ColonelBulderandSirThomasClubberexchangedsnuff-boxes,andlookedverymuchlikeapairofAlexanderSelkirks‘Monarchsofalltheysurveyed.
