           Mostpeopleknowwhatsortofplacescommercialroomsusuallyare.ThatofthePeacockdifferedinnomaterialrespectfromthegeneralityofsuchapartments;thatistosay,itwasalarge,bare-lookingroom,thefurnitureofwhichhadnodoubtbeenbetterwhenitwasnewer,withaspacioustableinthecentre,andavarietyofsmallerdittosinthecorners;anextensiveassortmentofvariouslyshapedchairs,andanoldTurkeycarpet,bearingaboutthesamerelativeproportiontothesizeoftheroom,asalady’spocket-handkerchiefmighttothefloorofawatch-box.Thewallsweregarnishedwithoneortwolargemaps;andseveralweather-beatenroughgreatcoats,withcomplicatedcapes,dangledfromalongrowofpegsinonecorner.Themantel-shelfwasornamentedwithawoodeninkstand,containingonestumpofapenandhalfawafer;aroad-bookanddirectory;acountyhistoryminusthecover;andthemortalremainsofatroutinaglasscoffin.Theatmospherewasredolentoftobacco-smoke,thefumesofwhichhadcommunicatedaratherdingyhuetothewholeroom,andmoreespeciallytothedustyredcurtainswhichshadedthewindows.
