           ‘Thank’ee,sir,’saidSam.Anddownhesatwithoutfurtherbidding,havingpreviouslydepositedhisoldwhitehatonthelandingoutsidethedoor.‘‘Tain’tawerygood’untolookat,’saidSam,‘butit’sanastonishin’’untowear;andaforethebrimwent,itwasaweryhandsometile.Hows’everit’slighterwithoutit,that’sonething,andeveryholeletsinsomeair,that’sanotherwentilationgossamerIcallsit.’Onthedeliveryofthissentiment,Mr.WellersmiledagreeablyupontheassembledPickwickians.

           ‘NowwithregardtothematteronwhichI,withtheconcurrenceofthesegentlemen,sentforyou,’saidMr.Pickwick.

           ‘That’sthepint,sir,’interposedSam;‘outvithit,asthefathersaidtohischild,whenheswallowedafarden.’

           ‘Wewanttoknow,inthefirstplace,’saidMr.Pickwick,‘whetheryouhaveanyreasontobediscontentedwithyourpresentsituation.’

           ‘AforeIanswersthat‘erequestion,gen’l’m’n,’repliedMr.Weller,‘Ishouldliketoknow,inthefirstplace,whetheryou’rea-goin’topurwidemewithabetter?’

           AsunbeamofplacidbenevolenceplayedonMr.Pickwick’sfeaturesashesaid,‘Ihavehalfmadeupmymindtoengageyoumyself.’

           ‘Haveyou,though?’saidSam.

           Mr.Pickwicknoddedintheaffirmative.

           ‘Wages?’inquiredSam.
