           ‘Theprincipalproductionsofthesetowns,’saysMr.Pickwick,‘appeartobesoldiers,sailors,Jews,chalk,shrimps,officers,anddockyardmen.Thecommoditieschieflyexposedforsaleinthepublicstreetsaremarinestores,hard-bake,apples,flat-fish,andoysters.Thestreetspresentalivelyandanimatedappearance,occasionedchieflybytheconvivialityofthemilitary.Itistrulydelightfultoaphilanthropicmindtoseethesegallantmenstaggeringalongundertheinfluenceofanoverflowbothofanimalandardentspirits;moreespeciallywhenwerememberthatthefollowingthemabout,andjestingwiththem,affordsacheapandinnocentamusementfortheboypopulation.Nothing,’addsMr.Pickwick,‘canexceedtheirgood-humour.Itwasbutthedaybeforemyarrivalthatoneofthemhadbeenmostgrosslyinsultedinthehouseofapublican.Thebarmaidhadpositivelyrefusedtodrawhimanymoreliquor;inreturnforwhichhehad(merelyinplayfulness)drawnhisbayonet,andwoundedthegirlintheshoulder.Andyetthisfinefellowwastheveryfirsttogodowntothehousenextmorningandexpresshisreadinesstooverlookthematter,andforgetwhathadoccurred!
