Mr.Pickwick’smind,likethoseofalltrulygreatmen,wasopentoconviction.Hewasaquickandpowerfulreasoner;andamoment’sreflectionsufficedtoremindhimoftheimpotencyofhisrage.Itsubsidedasquicklyasithadbeenroused.Hepantedforbreath,andlookedbenignantlyrounduponhisfriends.
ShallwetellthelamentationsthatensuedwhenMissWardlefoundherselfdesertedbythefaithlessJingle?ShallweextractMr.Pickwick’smasterlydescriptionofthatheartrendingscene?Hisnote-book,blottedwiththetearsofsympathisinghumanity,liesopenbeforeus;oneword,anditisintheprinter’shands.But,no!wewillberesolute!Wewillnotwringthepublicbosom,withthedelineationofsuchsuffering!
SlowlyandsadlydidthetwofriendsandthedesertedladyreturnnextdayintheMuggletonheavycoach.Dimlyanddarklyhadthesombreshadowsofasummer’snightfallenuponallaround,whentheyagainreachedDingleyDell,andstoodwithintheentrancetoManorFarm.
